I
was invited to participate in this year's Fast Blast that took
place at Hampton High School. Students raised $2600 for *SEVOTA
to support Rwandan widows and orphans. The students were spending
the weekend at the high school and volunteers were keeping everyone
busy with games, creating sculptures, clay figures, building and
painting drums. I was helping the students paint the drums with
African designs. The creativity was flowing.
We spent some time with the guest speaker, Claude, from Congo.
He reflected on his experiences living in Africa and giving aid
to the Rwandan people during the genocides. I learned a great
deal about the history of Rwanda and the difficulties people in
Africa face everyday.
It
was a great experience participating with the students, artists
and volunteers who had pulled this event together.
*Sevota:
A support group for the widows and orphans of the April 1994 Tutsi
massacre in Taba, Sevota facilitated the testimony of women survivors
for the ICTR and helps rape victims access medical care.
