The Elevator Pitch was an exciting event with over 20 dreamy-eyed
visionaries. These entrepreneurs had an opportunity to pitch their
business
idea to three judges while riding up and down the elevator. It was
a test of
ideas, nerves and communication skills.
I participated in this year's event. It is not for the faint of
heart. I
practiced for hours trying to perfect my idea and delivery. It was
harder
then I anticipated. We had to fit a lot of information in under
two minutes
(more like 90 seconds). Throw in some nervous jitters and a distracting
environment and you've got yourself an elevator pitch.
I started a few days earlier writing out my idea for a t-shirt line
and eventually cut it down to 7 or 8 sentences. The most important
part was practice, practice,
practice. I did get some additional advice that I found amusing.
Call one of
your in-laws and give them the pitch. If they understand, then your
message
was clear. I don't know what that says about in-laws.
My biggest triumph was walking into that elevator and giving it
everything I
had. Some people may not find that difficult, but when there are
three
judges waiting to hear what you have to say, it adds stress. It
was a big
step that I wouldn't have even considered a few years ago.
I went in, began my pitch and before I knew it, the ride was over.
I was
able to get out my entire idea, with the exception of a few fumbles.
It was
exhilarating stepping off that elevator. Although I didn't win a
prize, the judges shared that I was a top three contender before
rendering their decision. My husband, Mark, spent time coaching
me through this event. We were both so proud.
This elevator pitch made me realize I could really pitch a business
idea to
an investor. I now have the tools to focus a business plan into
a few
seconds while telling the investor exactly what they want to hear.
If you plan on taking your business idea to the next level - try
participating in an elevator pitch. You may just surprise yourself.
