New
Brunswick Museum Announces
Special Summer Art Exhibition
05/24/2005 - New Brunswick Museum
The New Brunswick Museum announced plans to exhibit works of art
inspired by the Museum collection throughout July and August.
The works were created by twenty four artists from Saint John especially
for a unique weekend event called Art and Artifacts. Billed as "a
studio tour with a twist", the art was exhibited throughout
the Museum's three floors of galleries, with artists on hand to
discuss their work.
For the summer exhibition, the twenty four major works of art will
be displayed together in one gallery. Jane Fullerton, Director of
the New Brunswick Museum, notes that "we most often think of
Museum collections being used for research purposes. This project
demonstrates not only the diversity of the Museum's collection,
but the different ways it can be used by different people."
Artist Elma Johnston McKay created a wire sculpture inspired by
a Chinese earthenware horse's head in the Museum's Decorative Arts
Gallery. Kathy Hooper produced a journal relating to the same small
horse. Colin Smith contributed a painting inspired by a quilt in
the Museum collection; Barbara Tracey-Larocque's quilt is a collage
made with foil candy wrappers.
The exhibition gives summer Museum visitors the opportunity to see
and appreciate the work of many talented local artists under one
roof. Suzanne Hill, an artist and one of the project organizers,
says the artists "are very pleased to exhibit their work as
part of a major group show at an institution with the stature of
our provincial museum." Both established and emerging artists
are represented, with work in various two and three dimensional
media.
Funds raised through the two day Art and Artifacts event go to a
fund established through the Greater Saint John Community Foundation
to assist professional artists.
